  • Overview

    About the Position

    Primary duties of the Youth Expedition Member include participating in all elements of the MCC program to the best of their ability, contributing to the functioning of the crew, and maintaining a positive attitude while completing natural resource and community service projects.   Expedition members will establish and maintain good working relationships with their Crew Leaders, fellow Expedition members, regional staff, and project technical advisors. The Expedition Member will utilize the support of their Crew Leader(s) and regional staff to complete their term of service successfully.  Youth Expedition Crew Members are supervised by MCC staff Youth Program Managers and are led on conservation projects by MCC Youth Crew Leaders.


    Service Duties:

    • Perform physical labor intensive fieldwork on a crew on various natural resource and community service projects.
    • Projects range from trail building, weed eradication, mapping of weeds via GPS, fence building, landscaping, streambank stabilization, native seed collection and planting trees.
    • Daily use of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, pulaskis, and Mcleods.
    • Participate in camp-life duties such as water filtration, meal preparation, and washing dishes.
    • Members may not perform any prohibited activities as outlined in the Member Service Agreement

    Programmatic Duties:

    • Ensure safety is the top priority during all MCC activities and projects and promote a ‘culture of safety’
    • Follow all MCC policies and procedures contributing to the overall functioning of the crew and creating a healthy and supportive crew environment
    • Willingly participate in all elements of the MCC Member Development program, education, and crew activities to the best of their ability
    • Promote a positive public image for the MCC by wearing the MCC uniform and acting in a professional and respectful manner at all times
    • Exhibit a strong work ethic and positive service ethic throughout the term of service

    Administrative Duties:

    • Complete and submit required reports and other paperwork in a timely manner
    • Provide information for evaluation of Crew Leaders, including both positive feedback and areas of potential improvement
    • Participate and accomplish tasked crew role


    • 14-17 years old
    • Ability to complete a criminal history check, self-certification
    • US Citizenship or lawful permanent resident
    • Commitment to complete the entire term of service
    • Strong service ethic and desire to serve the community and the environment
    • Ability to hike 3-9 miles per day in rugged terrain, often wearing a large backpack and carrying tools
    • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly
    • Willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away for full expedition length
